Viterbo, Vetralla to Sutri
This morning, I set off with a mix of excitement and uncertainty about my journey ahead—should I tackle 15 or 26 miles? I’ll decide at the halfway point based on how I’m feeling.
I really enjoyed the new crew I met last night. Mike was fantastic, and Italian guys in our group sparked engaging conversations about design, fashion, and even politics. It was a delightful exchange of ideas and cultures.
The morning hike from Viterbo to Vetralla was relatively short but pleasant. The trail offered views of the surrounding countryside, with gentle slopes and vibrant greenery. The fresh air and early morning light made for a refreshing start to the day. It was not really an exciting start, but pleasant for sure.
Arriving in Vetralla, I was greeted by its quaint streets and historic architecture. The town is known for its medieval charm, with narrow alleys and beautiful stone buildings that tell stories of the past. It’s a perfect spot to take a break and soak in the local culture.
While having coffee I met a great couple from France. They were hilarious and shared that they currently live in Milan but moving to Rome, so they decided to ride there! It’s always fun to meet fellow travelers on the road! I met them twice as they forgot one of their packs and had to return!
The 4-mile climb out of Vetralla was a challenge, reminiscent of my earlier days in the hills. I thought those steep ascents were behind me, but the heat—soaring above 90°F—made it even more demanding. However, the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top was worth every drop of sweat.
The afternoon hike through the forest was a welcome change. The temperatures were much cooler in the shade, and the lush greenery provided a serene backdrop for my journey. I felt rejuvenated as I walked, listening to the sounds of nature around me.
Unfortunately, I was caught in a thunderstorm on my way into Sutri. The sudden downpour was unexpected, but I embraced the adventure, laughing at the unpredictability of the weather.
Sutri is in the heart of Italy’s Lazio region. Known for its ancient Etruscan ruins, including a remarkable amphitheater carved into the rock! The town’s vibrant local culture is showcased in its delightful cafes and artisan shops, making it a perfect stop for a relaxing night after a long hike!
Tonight, I’m staying in a cozy B&B with two fellow travelers: a lady from Australia and a guy from Germany. They’ve been on the road since early May, and it’s been great to share our war stories over a glass of wine!
With just 44 miles (70 km) left to Rome, I can feel the excitement building. The journey continues!
