Aquapendente to Bolsena

This morning, I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast with Gertrude and Peter. It was a lovely time to sit down and chat, especially since our distance today is relatively short—no rush needed!

Today, we set our sights on Lake Bolsena. I’m in good spirits, rejuvenated after a restful night’s sleep, and excited to explore the diverse scenery along the way.

Accommodation is becoming a challenge with the influx of pilgrims heading to Rome, especially during the busy tourist season. It’s essential to secure lodging in advance, so we’ll need to stay flexible and see what’s available as we move forward.

The Walk to Bolsena

As we set off from Aquapendente, the path unfolded before us, lined with lush greenery and rolling hills. The air was fresh, filled with the scent of wildflowers and the distant sound of birds chirping. The trail meandered through charming countryside, dotted with quaint farms and rustic stone walls. As we walked, I noticed an increase in foot traffic, with school kids and young adults out and about, enjoying the beautiful day. The minimum distance for a pilgrimage certificate is 100 km, so I expect to see even more fellow travelers as we get closer to Rome.

I was thrilled to run into John, the pilgrim I met back in the early days of my journey. He’s quite a character, and it was great to catch up after all this time. He has been on the road for over 90 days and is still sleeping in a hammock!

About Bolsena

Bolsena is known for its rich history and beautiful architecture, including the stunning Basilica di Santa Cristina, which is a must-see. The town is also famous for its delicious local cuisine, particularly the fish dishes sourced from the lake. The vibrant atmosphere, combined with serene lake views, makes it a perfect spot for unwinding and soaking in the beauty of Italy.

Tonight marked my last evening with this wonderful group. I plan to double up on my walking legs tomorrow and possibly the day after, allowing me to reach Rome and have more time in the city. It’s been a fantastic journey with this crew, and while they will continue on to Rome next Friday or Saturday, I’ll cherish the memories we’ve created together.

We had a fantastic meal downtown, indulging in delicious spaghetti and fish paired with local wine. The flavors were absolutely amazing, and the lively atmosphere made for a memorable dining experience. On to Rome—91 miles (145 KM) to go!
