Massa and eventually to Camaiore

Massa was a charming town with more to offer than I had time to explore. The pasta was outstanding, and the local red wine—exactly what I needed—was the perfect way to end my evening.

After chatting with a few locals, I learned that a 25K race was taking place around the city that day—quite the challenge I imagine, considering the terrain! I decide to be sensible and hit the sack early (for once).

The following morning, I was up just after six, feeling well-rested and ready for the hike ahead. The weather greeted me with low clouds and early morning fog, but there was something magical about the atmosphere. I kept my eyes on the sea, which seemed to inch closer with every step.

As I passed through a small village, the scent of fresh bread wafted through the air. Unable to resist, I popped into a bakery and asked for something sweet. The locals recommended a pastry that tasted like a jam tart, but nowhere near as big!

The hike took me past an old castle and up a long, steady climb—about a mile and a half, but nothing compared to the tougher hikes I’d done earlier on my journey. The views were stunning, with occasional glimpses of the ocean through breaks in the clouds. As the sun began to burn off the fog, the coastline unfolded in all its glory.

The trail wound through vineyards on the hillsides, with perfectly spaced vines growing in terraced fields that had been cultivated for generations. There was something serene about the blend of nature and human craftsmanship—the rows of vines, rocky outcrops, and the occasional farmhouse dotted along the horizon. It felt like stepping through an ancient postcard.

From there, I made my way to Pietrasanta, a town renowned for its vibrant art scene. The streets felt like an open-air gallery, alive with sculptures and installations, from classical to modern, all crafted with incredible skill. It was a must-see for art lovers, with the beautiful mountain backdrop adding to its charm.

Later, I found myself in a bit of a last-minute scramble for accommodation. I had arrived at my place early , and when I checked in, the vibe reminded me of the British comedy show The Young Ones (for those who remember it!). After chatting with the residents, I realized the place probably wasn’t the best fit for me. I looked at the options over an ice cream and set my sights on Camaiore—the next town along the route.

Camaiore turned out to be pretty good, nestled at the base of the Apuan Alps. It had a laid-back, relaxed vibe compared to the more tourist-heavy spots along the coast. The narrow streets were lined with charming shops, cafes, and restaurants, giving it a welcoming, small-town atmosphere.

The main square was perfect for people-watching or grabbing a gelato—ideal for a relaxing evening after a day of hiking. Oh no I hear the band starting… I must check them out! It’s the right thing to do!
