After completing the Camino last year, I fully appreciate the importance of weight and walking long distances!! Its easy to justify a whole host of items as “essential”. Do not fall into this trap!  Be strict, things need to earn their way on to the list. The target should ideally, 10% of your body weight or a maximum of 7-10 kg (16-22 lbs.).

Items that will make the difference to your experience:

On long hikes injuries are frequent and shoes and socks really make the difference. I prefer trail runners over hiking boots because of the long stretches of road and improved trails on routes like the Via Francigena. Socks should be made of merino wool to limit moisture and odors! A well-fitted backpack (30-50L) with proper weight distribution is also crucial, to prevent rubbing. It is worth noting that weight loss during the hike will result in back pack adjustments!

Other necessities:

Clothing should be moisture-wicking and quick-drying: two sets of lightweight shirts (long sleeve), pants, underwear, along with a waterproof jacket. I carry a poncho for use in heavy rain. I also take a pair of shorts and light weight beech sandals for evenings.

A lightweight sleeping liner is useful for hostels. They typically provide a mattress cover only to avoid bed bug issues! Trekking poles help on steep or uneven paths. For senior hikers, this is very cheap insurance against falls.  Sunscreen, hat, neck tube, sunglasses for sun protection. Finally, battery chargers, portable power supply, adaptors and a money belt. I highly recommended keep cash, cards, and important documents secure. I got a money belts with Rfid blocking to avoid people scanning my credit cards! That is a pro tip!
