It is important to understand how long the escapade will take. Having a basis for your estimate is key to a stress free enjoyable experience. The route is approximately 2,000 km from Canterbury, England, to Rome, typically takes around 90 to 100 days to complete at an average pace of 20–25 km per day.
The UK section, from Canterbury to Dover, is short and can be completed in 1–2 days. The French segment, crossing northern France to the Swiss border, takes about 30–40 days. The Swiss portion, from Lausanne through the Alps to Italy, typically requires 7–10 days, while the Italian stretch, from the Great St. Bernard Pass to Rome, is the longest, taking 40–50 days.
For those aiming for an accelerated pace, experienced hikers can complete the route in 60–70 days by walking 30–40 km daily. Everybody has different capabilities and you should not under estimate the physical and mental challenge!!
Based my Camino experience, I am planning around 70 days. As with anything, you need a plan B. Mine is having flexible airline tickets in case of weather, illness etc. Also, when I travel to Europe I always stop by and see the family in the UK! It gives me the incentive to complete the hike! The thought of British beer is motivation for most things!!
